My students need 30 classroom Greek Mythology books, Greek Plays, cross curriculum non-fiction informational books for student projects on Ancient Greek Culture.
Democracy, Theater, Olympics, Aristotle, Mythology, Architecture? Yes, Greece comes to mind. What better place to start studying the world, but Greece. Children today require strong literacy and critical thinking skills with the ability to work together on a project.
My students are wonderful, bright and curious 4th graders who live in a large urban city in Illinois.
Our school is 98% free lunch. Students come from low income homes that don't always have computers to explore ideas and the world. My students don't have much opportunity to see outside of their neighborhood. Our school attendance is very high, students never want to miss a day of school. For them, school is their safety-zone, their place to explore, learn and have fun. Over the past 4 years our school has successfully improve our test scores with rigorous units based in Reading Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies all combined with critical thinking skills and group work.
My Project
These Ancient Greek resources will provide students background knowledge and insight into the Greek culture, allowing them to create a "Greek Week" Celebration at school.
Students begin the Greek study by reading, discussing and debating the moral lessons taught from ancient Greek myths. Next, students work in groups to perform and direct 6 ancient Greek plays to be performed live. Students study the Greek language, English word origins and independently read, research and discover the Greek culture. During "Greek Week" students will orally report and display their projects on ancient Greek architecture, math and science discoveries, geography, philosophy, democracy and the Olympics. Students will create a Poetry Taverna, where they recite their poetry and display their Greek pottery and art. A fashion show of Greek style clothing and a "Greek Food Feast" will conclude the study. Parents and community will be invited to celebrate all activities with students. My students need 30 classroom Greek Mythology books, Greek Plays, cross curriculum non-fiction informational books for student projects on Ancient Greek Culture.
The materials needed are independent non-fiction reading books and a classroom set of Greek Myths.
These materials will be used to promote student reading, writing and oral communication skills. These resources will provide students an opportunity to work independently as well as together in groups to create projects they share with classmates, family and community.
