This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The entire student population of my school receives a free or reduced-price lunch. Most do not have money for simple things like basic school supplies, book bags and clothes. If we're being honest, as a whole, urban public school children are largely overlooked, dismissed and underestimated.
Despite these obstacles, most of my students are admirably college-bound.
It is my goal to get a hundred percent of my students to college, but without preparation, which they achieve through completion of my projects and assignments, they will be ill-equipped for the expectations and stipulations of college coursework.
With that said, I try and provide my students with literature, resources, opportunities and technology that mirror those given to more affluent school districts. As a lot of my teaching style relies on positive reinforcement and the realization and strengthening of personal strengths and integrity, I strive to show my students that their worth is not dependent upon what school district or zip code they grew up in.
I won’t lie: I am immensely grateful that DonorsChoose.org added the option for us to create a project under the heading “warmth, care & hunger”.
Some of my students (those who actually HAVE homes to go to at night) sadly live in squalid conditions; the only clean, safe and stable environment they know is school.
With that said, I try and make my classroom the cleanest, safest and healthiest (physically, mentally, emotionally... and, of course, culturally and intellectually) place these students know.
Perhaps as a result of their home lives, my students can be moderately (if not profoundly) germophobic. And, likewise, I can be as well (I've never gotten sick more than when I started teaching).
I seek to alleviate my students' germophobia by keeping my classroom as spotless and germ-free as possible. Students in my district know that students in other (more affluent) districts don't have to deal with some of the conditions students in urban, impoverished districts must contend with, but I seek to prove to my students (by making my classroom as hygienically clean and as academically rigorous and technologically sound as possible) that they (and by nature their education) is just as important as the education of students in more affluent areas.
Healthy students learn. And I am making it my goal to ensure that my students' germophobia is eliminated, thus destroying one more roadblock between them and their education.
