Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 96% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
Our 6th grade team of Science teachers have an amazing opportunity for their students - hatching and raising chickens! During their unit, they learn all about the process of hatching a chicken, then hatch chickens as a class and then we get to keep the chickens! This is an experience not many of our city kids get to experience.
Having chickens at our school allows are students to learn about the life cycle of a chicken, but it also allows them to learn how to care for an animal and give it the best life!
The current handmade coop we have now allows the chickens to escape, which means they could hurt themselves. A new chicken coop would allow them to live a safe life, but also have students interact with their care. They are so excited to try the eggs that the chickens will lay once they have a new nesting area!
We are creating a whole new garden space for them in a secure space at our school through a project based learning assignment (which they will also be creating a children’s story about!). They will have plenty have sunshine and a fenced in area where they can peck at the dirt and bugs till their hearts are content!
Thank you for supporting our students (and our chickens!).
