Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How much sunshine does it take to make a healthy dose? Is a little bit of sunshine enough to synthesize Vitamin D? In order for my 9th grade HOSA students to participate in a Public Service Announcement Project to be featured in Sacramento, the need two Flip Video Camcorders to create their PSA's.
My 9th grade students are members of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).
They are fundraising to pay for their Regional Conference in Sacramento this Spring. As high school freshmen, they are eligible to compete in a state-wide Public Service Announcement competition. Sixty-seven percent of our students qualify for Title 1 designation. This project, is the first of many PSA's they plan to create. The Flip Video Camcorders will be put to good use as they fulfill the "effective use of technology" portion of the California State Standards. Even though the school is classified as "under-performing," my students are highly motivated and engaged in the learning process. Our small learning community (of approximately 380 students) are at their best when they work collaboratively and cooperatively.
My Project
In addition to making Public Service Announcements, the Flip Video Camcorders will be used to record plays, skits, and dramatic re-enactments (such as their assignment to recite 15 consecutive lines from Romeo and Juliet). There have been many opportunities to use a camcorder. These camcorders are going to have a positive influence in my classroom. What better way to inform a student about his/her performance than to provide immediate feedback?
My students will "Flip" into action if this this project is funded.
Something as simple as a Flip Video Camcorder can literally enhance the way my students "show what they know." When 40 of my students attended a film screened in Soanish with English subtitles, they were invited to submit a movie review--either written or via YouTube. Those who participated, completed their reviews on the computer. The next time, it would be wonderful for them to have a video production option.
