My Students

Our school is a public charter school on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We are designed to meet the needs of students with language-based learning differences, focusing primarily on students with dyslexia. We service students from over 26 different districts, from varying backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free lunch.

Our school and teachers employ a comprehensive, multi-sensory curriculum and instructional approach designed to support each student in reaching their learning potential.

Many of our students are experiencing success for the first time in their educational careers and are opening their hearts and minds to learning.

My Project

The 5th grade students at Provident Charter School are reading and studying the book, "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" written by William Kamkwamba. The memoir is about William as a young boy who was dismissed from his school due to his family's poverty. He sneaks into a library to learn how to build a windmill to save his village from famine.

Our students will be attempting to harness the wind by creating their own windmills in science class utilizing our school's makerspace.

By the end of our project, the students will be able to answer the question: can we generate enough energy to light up an LED light?
