it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We have great sets of books, but the majority of them have male protagonists and/or white authors. Your generous support has made it possible for us to make our collection more diverse and inclusive! The novel, The 57 Bus, is a true story about two teenagers growing up in Oakland, CA in 2013. One of them is a wealthy, white, gender nonconforming teenager and the other is a black teen who lives in the crime-plagued, poor part of the city. Their lives cross when they have an unfortunate run in on the 57 bus. This novel personalizes history and allows for students to see the world through the eyes of another. It sets the stage for courageous conversations about history, race, and social justice.
Teaching for Black Lives means having a deep understanding of racism in the history of the United States.
Reading this book will help students and educators have a fuller understanding of this country's history of not only white supremacy but also the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. I want to be able to work for a more equitable, diverse, just, loving, and peaceful community. May it be so!
