My Students

We build community and self by emphasizing creativity and performance, understanding our emotions and long term goals, and looking forward into the 21st century while seeking to understand the past.

My students come from all backgrounds: rich and poor, urban and rural, and the many different shades of skin color and faith. What we share is we are all West Virginian and we love music.

My Project

Music always changes and stays relevant to the times, and so music education must also change. Music students listen to rock, pop, and hip hop, and are more likely to be attuned to Black Violin than Itzhak Perlman. I seek to create an after-school program where strings students learn about contemporary music.

This electric violin will play a central role in realizing this program for my students.

With this violin, they'll learn everything about being in a band, not just the written music but also improvisation.) They'll also be further motivated to remain with strings and continue keeping it in their lives.
