This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"My generation uses technology!" This is a daily conversation starter in my household. Do you remember a time without all of the current technology our lives now depend on? As a young teacher I scarcely remember this day, yet I do recall the excitement of the new brightly colored Macintoshes.

Vivacious, loving, and eager are just a few words I would use to describe my two classes of third grade dual languages students.

My school is one of only a few dual language schools in the state of Iowa. Out of my forty-four students, 90 percent of them speak another language other than English at home, as well as come to me from a poverty level family structure. Due to this wonderful program, my 44 nine year olds are bilingual in Spanish and English. Being bilingual gives them a chance to succeed far beyond their imaginations, limitations, and pre-conceived plans set for their lives. My students have taken on the philosophy of their teacher (school should be fun) and what is more fun than interactive iPod touches to be used during the school day for learning?

My Project

As an advocate for technology in life, I believe iPod touches will revolutionize the way my classroom is run. There are several areas in which I will use these iPod touches in my classroom. One area is in individual and small group reading and language instruction due to the limitless number of apps for phoneme sounds, basic reading, and language acquisition skills. As an ESL teacher, I have several students who are just acquiring their English as a second language and would benefit from these interactive, kinesthetic, and auditory language apps. Another area in which these iPods will change my student's lives is in the area of individual and partner reading time, with the apps of iBooks, Kindle, and other E-readers the availability of auditory books and books available to read is limitless! Last, but certainly not least these iPods will be beneficial in small group math instruction time. Students can be using the math apps to work on math automaticity, graphs, and charts interactively.

Success is often begun by being presented opportunity to succeed.

The dual language program has opened so many doors for my students already, and I feel this added technology in my classroom will present so many more opportunities for great success. Due to the poverty level of the students that I serve, many students are never presented with the opportunity to engage with technology. The addition of iPod touches will enable these students to be far beyond in this current technology driven world.
