That Looks Like Me!

Help me give my students a classroom library that includes books that represent people of all colors and backgrounds. I want my students to be able to turn pages and see characters who look and feel like them.

My Students

My wonderful first graders come to me from very diverse backgrounds. They live in a very rural, low income area in Southern Delaware. In our classroom, we work hard! These little people are busy! I teach English Language Arts to 50 awesome kids. I want the literature I expose them to reflecting them and people who look like them and have similar experiences. My students already foster such a wonderful community environment. We are a family and I want to do everything in my power to encourage and maintain that atmosphere.

My Project

I am very intentional about the texts I choose for my students in order to engage them. However, in looking at my classroom library, I noticed there weren't many books on our shelves that represented ALL of my students. In order to build their empathy and understanding of other people and cultures, I would love to be able to show them more books with characters who look like them and experience similar life experiences.

Having books with characters who look, sound, and experience what my students do will make it easier to have valuable conversations about the value in each and every person.
