My students attend a middle school in the 2nd most diverse district in the state of MO. We have students from all kinds of backgrounds, countries, ethnicity and nationalities. What continues to surprise me about this is not how diverse they are, but how well they get along with one another despite their differences. They build relationships with one another based on common interests and situations rather than economic status or skin color.
Approximately 85% of my students are on free and reduced lunch, but that doesn't keep them from having big hearts and wanting to have a positive impact on those around them.
They are always willing to pitch in and help raise money for charities (though they often have little of their own), bring in items for food drives or even do little projects to "brighten up the place."
My students have the capacity to do great things given the right tools. It is important that they learn how to navigate their world in a way that has a positive impact on their society. Many of their backgrounds do not equip them for such a feat, but every positive experience we can give them will get them closer.
My Project
My seventh grade students are taking part in Thank You Thursdays this year. Every Thursday students write a note to someone that has had a positive impact on their lives in some big or small way. The thank you notes will be used in class weekly to promote the notion of kindness, to acknowledge positive acts of others and reinforce the idea that we are all connected to one another. My hope is that these notes will help create a sense of community both inside and outside of the school setting.
Writing thank you notes to others helps children develop into literate, empathetic and appreciative adults.
Many skills are needed to write thank you notes ranging from proper use of grammar and formatting to correct spelling and punctuation. Students also learn the appropriate way to address various kinds of people, both formal and informal, and the skill of properly addressing envelopes. Finally students learn to be appreciative of others kindness and generosity toward them and develop empathy as they see what others are willing to do for them and others.
