My Students

I teach at a Title I school in the Marion Oaks area of Ocala, Florida which means a majority of our students come from low income households.

I teach 7th grade advanced and regular Civics classes.

Our school has a fairly even mixture of white, African-American, and Hispanic students.

Marion Oaks is an unincorporated community on the outskirts of Ocala and Belleview, Florida in the United States. The current population is approximately 15,000. There are 3 schools in Marion Oaks.

My Project

I intend to have students read this novel about voting and how they can begin participating in the democratic process even in middle school. We would read this as a class and answer questions about what they have read.

The only way to increase voter participation (especially in the younger demographics) is to educate students on what they can and why they should do it.

This novel will be a good start for that and may help inspire some of my students to get involved in politics and campaigns at an early age.
