Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with an incredible group of 10th grade students in an urban school district. My students are energetic and engaged learners, and they love to collaborate with one another and to discuss their ideas. My students constantly reflect on their academic work, their contributions to the school community, and their work ethic. My students come from low income backgrounds, and for them school is a safe environment where they can grow as scholars, citizens, and community members.

Diverse students deserve opportunities to engage with diverse perspectives and curriculum.

My Project

Next year students will be tackling complex issues of race through a variety of lenses: modern day immigration, the history and ramifications of slavery, and how institutional racism still impacts our lives today.

These texts help build a library of high quality non-fiction texts that will help students build empathy and see themselves, their identities, and experiences reflected to them through my curriculum.

The selected books will be paired with the many novels, short stories, and poems we investigate through the year. Students will use the books provided by your donations to expand their understanding of our class texts: "Chains," "La Linea", "A Raisin in the Sun," and the poetry of Maya Angelou, Margaret Walker, and Lucille Clifton.
