Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each year I have five classrooms of between 5-15 amazing students. They are driven, compassionate, intelligent, kind, and show extremely high levels of perseverance. My students are also identified as having disabilities.
Respecting my students' diverse learning styles and finding ways for them to express their knowledge in various ways leads to levels of success that are paramount to developing strong, lifelong learners.
Once my students learn that they have the ability, they don't let anything get in their way.
My Project
My students have a wide range of reading abilities. We offer several accommodations and supports at my school, but in large general education classes it can be easy for students with disabilities to get lost or fall behind. Additionally, many of my students do not have personal cell phones or tablets that they bring to school. One app that is needed by many students is TextFairy. TextFairy takes pictures of text from textbooks, notes, or handouts and turns it into a document that then is read to the students. Additionally, the document can be pasted into Google Read/Write for future access at home or other places it is needed.
A small tablet that can run the Android apps for text-to-speech and speech-to-text will allow students to be more independent and integrated into the general education setting.
Diverse learners deserve a learning environment that can be flexible and fluid for each individual. My students will use the tablets by checking them out for classes where they will need text-to-speech or other supports. This will allow for students with various disabilities to access the same grade-level content and provide more opportunities for success.
