My Students

The reality of high-stakes testing makes it critical that children "show what they know" on standardized tests. At the same time, we know that 80% of children experience test anxiety, diminishing their ability to do so. My challenge: to teach students the test-taking strategies that lead to success.

I am the school counselor for students in grades 3-5 in a public, suburban elementary school.

They are a diverse group culturally and economically. My students work hard and strive to do their best academically and behaviorally. When it comes to test time, many of my students experience anxiety about their academic abilities and test performance. One of the greatest challenges for my students is to overcome the anxiety they feel around testing, particularly state achievement tests that consume the better part of a week in April. This anxiety can diminish their recall and ability to problem solve. My goal is to help them master the strategies that will allow them to perform well on standardized tests--now and in the future--so that these tests accurately reflect my students' abilities. Because these standardized tests are used to determine academic placement, college acceptance, and scholarships, they will have a significant impact my students' future opportunities.

My Project

Two of the books in this project involve test-taking strategies. These books will provide my students with strategies they can use during test-taking sessions to reduce their anxiety and increase their confidence and problem-solving abilities. I am including the book "Bullying in Schools" in this project because bullying behaviors can also increase test anxiety, particularly in children who are worried about being seen as either “too smart” or “not smart enough” by their peers. When students have strategies to handle bullying behaviors they worry less about how they are perceived by others; as students begin to then develop a healthy self-concept, this potentially complicating factor in test anxiety becomes moot. As a final element of this project, each student will receive special "message" pencils to use during testing. These pencils will serve as a "hands-on" reminder of the multiple strategies students can implement to truly “show what they know."

The results of these tests significantly impact individual students, teachers, and schools. As my students gain the test-taking strategies that allow them to truly "show what they know" these tests will become a truer reflection of their academic abilities. Because students take standardized tests throughout their school careers, this project has significant, long-term implications for my students' future educational and economic opportunities.
