Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mainly from a low-income neighborhood. We are also an overflow school so we incur new students all year long. Many of the students have switched school several times in their elementary career. This proposes several obstacles in teaching.
Our school is over 80% free and reduced lunch.
There is no art program or music provided in our district. This is something that students enjoy tremendously and I strive to include both in my lessons. The state is pushing new science standards and the students are excelling in that area as well.
My students are voracious readers and even though many are below grade level, they are making great strides. They are curious and imaginative and I am so excited to foster these characteristics in them!
My Project
My students are in need of good-quality, durable headphones for accurate state testing. State tests are now done electronically using iPads. This is great in some ways, and harder in others.
Students need to be able to hear the directions clearly in order to do their best work.
The schools only provide earbuds which make students' ears sore and do not have proper sound quality. In some cases, they don't even work and students have to take turns testing. These headphones are much more comfortable since they fit over the ears. When students are testing for more than 4 hours a day, this is highly beneficial.
In addition to comfort and sound quality, these headphones allow students to adjust volume. Some students need the additional control in order to be successful. Special needs students are especially sensitive to loud noise.
The privacy offices allow students to remain at their own desks during testing rather than being moved and placed throughout the room. Our classroom is very small and shaped like a trapezoid, so students have little space and may not move at all during testing. These offices will give them more freedom as they will have access to their own belongings when they finish testing.
