Telling Our Story: Editing Podcasts

My students need 2 netbook computers to research and work on their podcasts whenever they need to in class.

I work at an extremely diverse school in a rural town in North Carolina. Last year, before the recession hit, we were at 70% free or reduced lunch. I feel that we will be much higher this year. Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes in which they do not have access to computers.

While the school makes an effort with technology, there is not enough technology to go around. We have 28 core teachers vying for one computer lab and two mobile carts at any given time. The only computer in the classroom is my teacher computer and that is usually being used to project PowerPoint and movie clips.

The students absolutely LOVE being able to work on the computer. This year I have decided to work on the computer skills that the students will need in high school and post-graduation. Towards that end, I have started a podcasting project in which students will create their own podcast about what they are learning in the sixth grade. Unfortunately, since we recorded the first practice session four weeks ago, we have not been able to get into a computer lab. If we had two dedicated netbook computers in the classroom, a few students would be able to work on their podcasts every day. In addition, it would be wonderful to have the additional research resource. Students are always coming up with interesting and intriguing questions to which I do not have the answers. I want to teach them about proper internet search skills and give them the ability to find the answers to their questions. With the two netbook computers, my students would be able to learn this valuable skill.
