This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm so fortunate to be looping with my students from last year, watching them rise from juniors to seniors. Last year (and for the past 3 before that) I was teaching Algebra 2 and now I'll be moving into the Environmental Science role. My kiddos are smart, super sweet, and many will be the first in their families to go to college. Most of my students are of color and are low income, some even have recently moved to the United States and learned English. Their experience with science at my school has been tumultuous to say the least. A lot of teacher turnover, and frankly bad replacements, has led to them not knowing or loving science... yet.
My Project
Testing water quality is one of those labs that everyone remembers from high school science. Without access to a kit like this, I don't think my kiddos will be given the same experience. For a lot of them, this hands on experience will be exactly what they need to feel like they're ACTUALLY doing something in science class. This would fit perfectly in my Earth Systems and Resources unit, which I plan to teach in December 2019. If it is bought later than that, we can also use it when we discuss water pollution. I can't wait to watch my students try to figure out what all of the colors mean.
