My Project

Knightdale High School is an urban, Title I school with a very diverse population, both culturally and economically. Having access to books is an important part of developing literacy skills and a love a reading, which is a strong predictor of future success. Our library has a growing collection of diverse books that represent our students, but the most popular books are often checked out, making access an issue. Research has shown that providing books to low-income homes can bridge the gap between socioeconomic status and academic performance. We want our students to be able to fill their bookshelves at home.

At KHS, our library program strives to help our teens develop a love of reading.

So often, literacy efforts are focused on elementary students, but we believe our high school students deserve that same level of devotion. This April, we will host a literacy month filled with activities with the throwback theme, "Reading Rainbow: Find the JOY in Reading," which will include daily giveaways of the books from our grant. Fostering their love of reading sets our students up for success in life - help us support them now and in the future.
