Reading for pleasure is one of the most important predictors of future success. In elementary school, every teacher encourages reading, and every student reads daily. Something happens between elementary school and high school that diminishes that love of reading and gives students a warped sense that reading only happens in English class and comes with a test or essay. Our goal is to get high school students reading again, to enjoy it as they did in elementary school, and to encourage their teachers to give them a choice. We do this by highlighting materials that our students love, facilitating a student-led literacy week every year, and sponsoring a "Drop Everything And Read" initiative. Graphic novels are an excellent way to appeal to reluctant readers, language learners, and students who otherwise might not read a book their entire high school career. They allow students to combine text and visuals to increase comprehension and interest, all with the goal of encouraging our students to become lifelong readers. We put our students' interests at the center of our purchasing, letting them know that we care about what they like to read and that it is important for us to carry materials that represent them. Graphic novels continue to be consistently requested and circulated. We believe our students deserve to reap the many benefits that reading has been proven to provide: stress relief, empathy, increased vocabulary, increased focus, and abundant imagination.
