This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I magnet high school that has a wide variety of career and technical programs that students participate in. Since we are not a designated neighborhood school, our students come from all over the county, often riding on a bus for hours in order to attend. In any one class, I might have students in a culinary program, a commercial art program, an architecture program or even a medical skills program. With such diverse needs, it's challenging to find ways to keep them all interested through the curriculum alone while still maintaining high standards of learning.
My Project
These books are going to give me the opportunity to offer students a chance to extend their learning outside of the classroom. When reading Sophocles' Antigone, for example, I get lots of students interested in Greek gods and goddesses. With these materials, I can offer students a manga, a graphic novel, Edith Hamilton's classic collection or even an illustrated reference book. We have to follow their interests if we want to make readers out of them! At the same time, it's important that we try to push them to read texts that they will learn and grow from. The focus of the sophomore curriculum is culture and community. As a class, we read one novel and two plays together throughout the year. Most of the time, however, our curriculum involves excerpts and shorter texts. These books would really compliment our class.
