Teen Refugees and English Learners Deserve More Than Children's Books
Help me give my students some elementary-reading-level books that are actually about high school subjects. They're so hard to find and so expensive. It really helps my high school English learners to have appropriate material that's not infantilizing.

My Project
The teenagers in my class have journeyed here from places like Syria, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and South Sudan. They speak and read languages like Arabic, Spanish, Swahili, and Pashto.
Unfortunately, most of the existing books for beginning English readers are - not surprisingly - geared towards young children.
Learning a new language in a brand new country is humbling enough without having to feel embarrassed about reading a cutesy book intended for someone much younger.
Saddleback Publishing is one of the few companies whose stories are for English-learners who are teens and young adults! The topics include sci fi, suspense, home life, fitting in, romance, and adventures. There are also nonfiction books and graphic novels of the classics (like Shakespeare) that they have to read in Language Arts. I can't tell you what a difference it makes in engagement.
Most of my students have grown up without bedtime storybooks and library access. The physical process (which we take for granted) of opening a book, reading down the page, and turning to the next one may be unfamiliar to them. And even if they can mimic the actions, there's no telling if they've actually comprehended what they've read.
These beginning-level books have a lot of intriguing visuals and as little as one or two simple sentences per page. They also offer pictures and themes that help newcomers adjust to American high school life. I'd like to order multiple sets because if we have enough copies of the same book (I have up to 15 students per class), we can all read along together, which makes the process much less intimidating. Even better - we can have fun discussing the book together in English!
