The goal of our book club is to promote literacy and a culture of reading in our school. Our students meet for monthly book club meetings. They share their thoughts on books, make recommendations, and offer informal book talks. At our school Book Fair, students share a presentation on a book or literacy issue of their choice. They also make a visual presentation (video, trifold board, bento, etc.). We offer awards for Best in Fair and a Student Choice Award. Award winners receive all of the 10 books on the LTRC list and participants all receive an LTRC book! We also have a group of students preparing for the district’s high school level Battle of the Books. Students will compete in categories like constructed response, performance, and a Jeopardy style question round.
Books like "Call Him Jack" have sparked productive conversations among students and staff alike.
Our readers have confronted mature topics such as social equality, race, social class, politics, gender, and death through the book titles featured at our meetings.
While our library is well-stocked with popular titles, increasing access is a priority to keep students reading. Additional copies of these titles increases participation and keeps books circulating. Offering free book giveaways will promote the culture of reading across our school. In addition, our students often become so passionate about a book that they want to read it over and over. Free book giveaways will allow all students to own a book of their own and fuel their passion for reading.
