Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been a school social worker for over five years. Our school is a traditional, urban neighborhood high school located in Northwest Denver that serves a diverse group of over 1,300 students. 69% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and 34.9% are English learners who have participated or are participating in Denver Public Schools’ English Language Acquisition (ELA) Program. 80% of our population identifies as students of color.

Over the past year, our students have experienced unprecedented loss and other challenges to their emotional wellness.

We work with several community partners to support student mental health, but our students have consistently and clearly voiced a desire to be better able to help each other through these difficult times. This is particularly urgent because our students have endorsed being more impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic than the state average by approximately 7%. Approximately 18% of our students have endorsed elevated social-emotional risk during the 2020-2021 school year. We also know that the rate of teen suicide in Colorado increased by 58% from 2016 to 2019, the sharpest rise in the country.

My Project

Through this project, two members of North's mental health team will be trained to deliver Teen Mental Health First Aid training to students at North and North's feeder middle schools. This will result in 50-75 students being trained as peer responders to mental health crises during the 2021-2022 school year, with the intention of increasing these numbers by 50-100 trained students in every school year to follow. Since these funds will train building-based trainers, they will allow us to ultimately train several hundred students over school years to come.

Our school would be the first DPS school delivering Teen Mental Health First Aid programming, and would be one of approximately 200 tMHFA training sites nationwide.

Unlike the more accessible Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid programs, teen Mental Health First Aid directly teaches high school students, as opposed to the adults around them, how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders among their friends and peers. The training gives students the skills to have supportive conversations with their friends and get a responsible and trusted adult to take over as necessary. Well known public figures trained in MHFA include Lady Gaga, Michelle Obama, and former NFL player Brandon Marshall.
