My students need beautiful books to help each other learn about each other's cultures and to inspire them to create a class book honoring each of their lives and cultures.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are teenage immigrants from all over the world. Some have escaped war, walked across Mexico, said goodbye to family and friends, all in the hopes of having a better future here in the US.

Many students travel 1-2 hours, waking up at 5 in the morning, to arrive at school on time, all after working 8 hours after school.

They work tirelessly and deserve the best chance at a safer, brighter future for themselves and their families.

My school is about 50% English Language Learners and one of the high schools in town that welcomes literally everyone who desires to attend.

My Project

When my students open the books that honor their cultures with stories and pictures, they will smile and begin talking to each other excitedly! "There is my favorite food! I know that place!" As students share multicultural stories and photos from these books with each other, I will teach them powerful academic language to express their connection to their own cultures and special places.

From this enthusiastic launch, they will write their own memoirs and create a class book that honors their lives and cultures.

In a community event, students will proudly share their stories with families and friends. This in turn, will not only promote tolerance, but acceptance and love.
