The goal of our book club is to promote literacy and a culture of reading in our school. Our students meet for monthly book club meetings. They share their thoughts on books, make recommendations, and offer informal book talks. We have scheduled an in-person author visit and book signing with Kayvion Lewis, author of the new novel “Thieves’ Gambit.” Kayvion Lewis lives in our city and is a librarian! Our teens will love hearing about her writing process and the backstory of her characters and her own personal life. Our project will provide free books for our students to have signed by Kayvion Lewis! This will be a great incentive for our teen readers and will build excitement around literacy and reading as they meet an author in person as well! The book will also serve as a memento of the occasion.
Books like "Thieves Gambit" have sparked productive conversations among students and staff alike.
Our readers have confronted mature topics such as social equality, race, social class, politics, gender, and death through the book titles featured at our meetings.
While our library is well-stocked with popular titles, increasing access is a priority to keep students reading. Additional copies of these titles increases participation and keeps books circulating. Offering free book giveaways will promote the culture of reading across our school. In addition, our students often become so passionate about a book that they want to read it over and over. Free book giveaways will allow all students to own a book of their own and fuel their passion for reading.
