My 6th, 7th and 8th grade students hail from 14 different countries and have much to offer our school in terms of interesting cultural and linguistic backgrounds. What I would like to offer them is a multitude of avenues for acquiring the English language, which would include technology.
These middle school ELL (English Language Learners) are coming to our school from countries where they have varying degrees of previous education.
Despite the cultural differences, they are of this generation, and therefore are hungry for interactions with technology.
My Project
The Osmo Gaming System for iPad is a unique addition to the I-pads we have available to us in our classroom. This tool provides an additional dimension to what can be done with the I-pad and comes with three main activities. One is focused on vocabulary, one on visual-spatial relationships and one on engineering.
The subscription to Brainpop ESL would be an exciting alternative to the basic conversational practice that needs to occur in order to improve English skills. It has interesting videos and games that allow the student to independently practice and enhance the learning that goes on in their ELL Literacy class. Both tools would have instant appeal because of their uniqueness and connection to technology.
These technological tools would breathe a fresh perspective into the English Language Learning classroom and motivate students to take risks, be creative, and work hard.
It will also provide my students, who often don't have the technological resources in their homes, a chance to get some firsthand experience with these things.
