This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Kindergarten at a Title I school. The majority of our students receive free or reduced rate lunch and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. A high percentage of the students in my class are ESOL as well as some students with special needs.

My students come from diverse backgrounds and I love to foster their uniqueness.

They all bring something special to our classroom. They have limited resources at home, and my goal is to provide them the resources needed to succeed.

My Project

A majority of our displaced students coming from Puerto Rico where a devastating hurricane Maria recently struck do not speak the English language.

These families have been forced to relocate into our community. In addition to financial restraint, many of these families have been greatly impacted and this has created additional problems for most. I have observed that the new culture and language is a shock to them and they are scared and do not want to express themselves. They have been through a major crisis and seeing this on the news is devastating as a teacher. I wish to comfort them and teach them to make up for valuable teaching time they have lost. I wish to have these resources available for them that will benefit their learning immensely. From my experience, I see that they find technology exciting and are eager to learn how to use it. My students need iPads. My goal is to use the tablets in a center. I plan to download educational applications that will expand their language skills. They will be able to learn letter and letter sounds and expand their vocabulary in interactive ways. This will allow them to learn the language and feel more comfortable expressing themselves. Breaking down the language barrier will allow them to feel at home.

It is vital that we comfort our displaced students and educate them in a way that will make them forget the crisis they have recently gone through.

By using the resources in my classroom for these students, it will allow them to expand their knowledge and make it exciting at the same time. Donations to my project will make a significant impact in their lives. They will look forward to the interactive applications and expand their language skills.
