Technology to Explore Passion Projects in 2nd Grade!

My Students

Curious, active, passionate, independent, eager and diverse are just a few words to describe the amazing 2nd graders I have the pleasure of working with every day! As a teacher who works with students from a low-income, Title 1 elementary school, I am challenged to seek opportunities and resources that will provide my students with meaningful and innovative learning experiences.

My students absolutely love to learn and are constantly wondering about the world around them.

My students enjoy asking questions, researching and solving problems. Given the proper tools and resources I believe my students could explore their passions while they are meeting their academic goals.

My Project

I work with a diverse group of learners with many different interests and passions. One thing all my students love is technology. Providing my class with Kindle tablets will allow them to collaborate, create and research while they work on Passion Projects, which is a core component to Genius Hour. Genius hour is a movement in schools that allows students to explore their own passions. The concept for Genius Hour is derived in part from the idea of “20% Time.” This is Google’s work structure for its employees, who are allowed to spend 20% of their time on projects they design and are interested in.

The idea with Genius Hour in the classroom is that it will empower kids to uncover ideas that they are truly interested in, and then their motivation, creativity and achievement will increase.

To provide my students with rich opportunities to explore the subjects they enjoy, additional technology such as the Kindle fire, will allow them to research and create projects in a safe, supervised manner. Allowing students to explore their own passions once a week will increase motivation and help improve creativity and critical thinking in my learners.
