In a world where virtually everything we do involves technology, it is important that children learn to use computers at an early age. As a teacher of technology, my primary concern is to ensure that students get the basic computer skills they need to succeed in the future. This type of education, however, is difficult to implement without the proper equipment.
At PS 87, a New York City public school, we are fortunate enough to have a brand new computer lab furnished with 30 Apple computers. Each computer is installed with a variety of educational software programs. Through project-based assignments, students from kindergarten to 5th grade learn everything from using a mouse to creating a webpage. What is missing is an essential teaching tool that would enable me to teach lessons and monitor student progress more effectively?a laptop.
After getting the lab up and running, there was no money left in the PS 87 technology budget for the purchase of a laptop for educators. A laptop would allow for greater versatility in teaching technology in the lab as well as within other classrooms. It can be connected to a projector for conducting demonstrations and showing student work. It can be hooked up to computers throughout the building and used to work with small groups of students or teachers on a diverse range of projects. While the lab is not currently optimized for digital film work, a laptop would provide the option for teaching in this area. It could also be used for the production of school events such as class performances and graduation ceremonies.
Knowledge about technology is so important for today's young students. They will be able to apply and expand upon the skills they obtain in elementary school throughout their educational careers and thereafter. The task of laying the educational groundwork in the field of technology for the more than 800 PS 87 students is an enormous one. This is a task that could be made significantly easier simply with the aid of a laptop. I am therefore requesting an Apple Macbook Pro. Our whole school community would benefit from this gift.
