Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title 1 school located in district 6 in Harlem, New York, a very diverse district. The school’s demographics consist of Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, Whites and Others. Furthermore, 15% of the student body are students with learning disabilities, and 86% are eligible for free lunch. The diverse nature of my students is what makes us special.
My students are a group of fearless and creative individuals with a tremendous curiosity to learn and longing drive be successful.
They are open to learning about each other's culture and different perspectives which makes our community stronger.
Nelson Mandela once said, “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do”. I can resonate with this statement both personally and professionally. I believe all of my students can rise and achieve success regardless of their circumstances, as I did. I am passionate and committed to child advocacy with a solid focus on the needs of students with disabilities, English Language Learners and Diverse Learners. I hope to inspire my students to believe that they too can be successful regardless of their circumstances.
My Project
Transitioning to high school from middle school can be very challenging for our students. We work hard to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible. Our students arrive in the 9th grade with very low-levels in reading, writing, mathematics, and social-emotional skills. In order to help close this deficit, we are launching a brand new foundational course to provide our diverse learners the foundational and fundamental skills needed to be successful in high school and beyond. Within this course, students will develop social, emotional, and academic skills using culturally relevant and engaging tasks.
Students will read short stories, listen to audiobooks, NPR interviews, TEDtalks, they will create podcasts & slides presentations, compete using Kahoots, and engage in a cultural exchange project, creating a global classroom.
Additionally, students will develop academic skills using iXL, our new skills-based computerized program. Finally, using Chromebooks for Google Classroom provides my students with a platform to increase engagement, communication, build community and reinforce learning outside of my classroom's walls.
Help me give my students Chromebooks to learn and leap across the digital divide!
