My students come to the classroom each day excited to learn and want to have hands-on experiences in the science classroom. My students are from a large inner-city urban school setting and deal with many personal challenges prior to coming into my classroom. Learning science is not one of the challenges for my students. They are naturally inquisitive, effectively debate about environmental issues and solutions, and they are kinesthetic learners. Upon reflection with my students, they say we love that our teacher gets us involved in the science! It is not enough that we lecture about science concepts, but the students can best remember what they do in science.
Whether it be a learning disability or just a love of technology, all students deserve the opportunity to experience academic success! My students appreciate being able to demonstrate how they learn using differentiated learning activities. On a daily basis, we are using hands-on discovery, video documentaries, Socratic discussions, and technology-based instruction. My students are thrilled to use various resources to support their learning in my environmental science classes. Access to technology within in my classroom is mostly limited to students using their own personal wireless devices to include cell phones or tablets/laptops that they bring from home. Requesting additional technology will help my students who do not have personal devices integrate easily in the classroom activities by participating in assignments such as review games, virtual labs, independent research, and submitting assignments without wasting paper! Now that is environmentally sound!
