This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are enthusiastic about learning. They work hard everyday in all subject areas, even if it has been traditionally tough for them. In the area of technology, they ask a lot of questions and are eager to learn everything they can with the small amount of time we have in the computer lab.
My students are fourth graders in an inner-city neighborhood in a K-8 school.
Our school is beginning to get more technology for the students, but there is not nearly enough for every classroom to use on a daily basis. My students have a class set of technology to use 80 minutes a week, and next term we will not have this regularly scheduled time at all. Additionally, at the end of the year, my students will take the new PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career) exam online. Not only will my students be facing the challenging curriculum, but my students will also have to overcome their lack of exposure to technology while taking this exam.
My Project
In a few short months using our limited computer time, my students have learned to use gmail, google classroom, and their google drives. They have typed their published work on the g drive and have also shared it with me. But there is still a lot to learn! If we had classroom technology, my students would have more ownership of their learning. Rather than using just the books I have in my classroom, students could research any topic that they would like to type an informative essay about. I would also like to teach my students to use google presentation to help them become college and career ready. I would like to implement a typing program each morning when the students come in so that they can use computers more efficiently. Schools that are more affluent have had these resources for students for many years. My students deserve these same opportunities.
Donations to this project will help close the achievement gap for my students so they can be on a level playing field with students across the country.
My students and I will take care of this technology so it can be used for years to come. This will change my students' lives by giving them access to a technological world they aren't currently being exposed to.
