Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my financial literacy advisory create and implement financial service projects to benefit the community. Each project has included student-designed print materials, apps, and informational videos that are distributed to students, their families, and local non-profit organizations.
My school is a Title 1 school located in New York City that believes in inquiry and project based learning.
Most of my students are from immigrant families and will the be first in their families to graduate from high school. They are a dedicated group of individuals who take pride in their work and strive to make their families proud.
My students have very high standards but lack resources. While my school is able to provide basic school supplies to students for daily use, we do not have appropriate technology that would enable my students to create the projects they dream up.
My Project
Each year my financial literacy class produces a series of informational materials to share with their peers, families, and the community. With the Apple MacBook Pro, my students will be able to create professional financial literacy videos through iMovie that can be shared on the class website. Currently, we have no means to do so; therefore their past videos contained audio issues and unstable video. The classroom desktop is a Windows PC with Windows XP. Its limited publishing features make it difficult for students to create marketing materials that are up to their standards. The iWork Suite in the MacBook Pro will allow my students to produce materials that match their vision. Finally, a group of students wanted to create financial literacy apps for students to download and use; however we did not have the technology that would allow them to do so. The power of the MacBook Pro would enable them to work with programming software so they can write the code for their apps.
This year's financial literacy service project was limited due to the lack of appropriate technology.
After the project roll-out, I debriefed with my students and their overwhelming feedback was that they needed a better computer. Some of the reasons stated were the need for faster processing, editing ability, and programming capabilities. By donating to this project, you will enable my students to produce projects that are enhanced by the latest technology, instead of limited by old technology.
