My Students

My students are always willing to try new experiences; they like the challenge of the new and the unknown. Although we work hard daily to learn academics we also have plenty of time to play and enjoy being children. One of our biggest challenges is to help our children learn to read.

My students are all Native American; they live in a rural area with a high percentage of the people creating some form of art within their homes (pottery, jewelry, painting, weaving, etc.) Most of the students come from families that practice the cultural and religious beliefs of our ancestors.

Our school includes Pre-K through 2nd grade; most of the teachers in the classroom are Native American from this area. Our school reflects the traditions and beliefs of the people so many of our cultural events are celebrated during our school year. We encourage parental involvement, we have high academic expectations for our students, and we celebrate our students' successes through school wide events and through community activities.

My Project

My students will use the iPads in our reading block (90 minutes of instruction) during our reading center rotations. They will also use the iPads for small group intervention with a teacher or teaching assistant and for small group research projects. We will use the iPads as an incentive during our self-selection time (free choice of structured activities for children) so that they are able to explore the different sites and applications, on the iPads, on their own.

The students will be able to interact with the iPads and enrich their literacy experiences through the diversity of the tools.

Their experiences with the iPads will promote language, worldwide knowledge, interaction with classmates, improvement in reading strategies, and gains in academic achievement.
