My Students

Hello everyone,

My name is Nichole Long and I am a Middle School Life Skills Teacher at Founders' Hall Middle School, in the McKeesport Area School District.

Our district is a low-income district with decreasing funds. This is my first year within the life skills setting as I previously was a special education teacher in the learning support setting. I am trying to encourage my students to learn life skills in order to be able to function in the 'real world' once they leave middle and high school. Our students needs lots of hands on activities in order to learn. My classroom is very small and we have limited resources for this. Several of my students are non-verbal and rely on sign language, pointing and even making noises in order for us to understand their wants and needs. With the use of technology we would be able to engage these students in a manner that would benefit the students to increase their ability to be able to hold a job once they graduated high school at the age of 21.

My Project

I would like to incorporate the use of technology in my classroom for both academics and life skills lessons. Some of my students are non-verbal, which means they do not verbally communicate with others. Some students rely on little sign language and/or pointing to get the items they want or need. Some students are able to use verbal communication but at times it is difficult for them to express themselves. I have students who also are unable to physical write on paper, their motor skills are not developed. Using an Ipad would make daily tasks so much easier for them.

if given this opportunity to have a few IPads in the classroom my students will learn to use technology for both academics and life skill related tasks.

My students can work on several different skills that they possibly would need to make themselves more independent.
