My students come from a low socioeconomic area. The students I have are children of parents I have already taught. Most of these parents were in the same situation(very low) when I taught them, leading to a deficit in both parents and children. There are 60% our of the students on reduced and free lunch. There are several ESL students who have difficulty with speaking English. I am using Laying the Foundation as my tool to teach by this year hoping to improve the gap between these students. This program uses many different techniques of writing.
I have found that these students want to write more when they are able to use technology.
But, our school is not one lucky enough to have a device for each student, nor do we have enough to share among teachers.
My Project
Most of my students do not have access to computers at home, and the only use of computers that they have is through the school. They write constantly through Learning the Foundation. They are reluctant sometimes to want to write, but through the use of technology it changes something dreaded to something enjoyable.
They research questions that are not stated in the written text.
They go into the internet to find answers. They then write papers that answer the questions they were asked. They learn other aspects of technology such as Google Classroom, Google Docs and how to transfer information to another source.
The goal is for students to enjoy reading and writing.
They use the computers to research, write, and learn to edit their papers and accomplish this goal.
