My Students

Algebra homework... what many math students dread! This task is made more challenging by the lack of technology available to most students at home. Many cannot afford the expensive graphing calculators needed causing them to struggle in their understanding of key concepts when completing homework.

These are 8th grade students taking Algebra 1.

A large percentage of the students are categorized as "gifted" in math. These students work extremely hard and take pride in their education. They have great potential to go far in this world and accomplish much as future contributors to society! The school they attend is a larger middle school with approximately 800 students. These are students whose math achievements stand out making them leaders amongst their peers. They accept the challenge of advanced math and excel in their studies.

My Project

I am requesting graphing calculators. These supplies are used to supplement many mathematical concepts in the classroom. While students are still required to know how to do math by hand, the calculators are used to extend their learning and take it to the next level. Graphing calculators are used after a fundamental concept has been completed by hand. Students then learn how to use technology to work more efficiently. Since many students cannot afford graphing calculators to use at home, they miss out on valuable practice with this technology. By gaining more calculators for the classroom, this will allow students to borrow calculators and make use of them at home when completing their homework and when they are studying for tests.

We have a shortage of graphing calculators in the classroom which limits access and impedes learning.

Currently, students come in to school early in order to use the graphing calculators. This grant will not only help eliminate this shortage, but it will also ensure that we have a "classroom set" of calculators that will be used to expand students learning experiences in that setting.
