Technology in the Classroom

Help me give my students an opportunity to improve their communication skills with headsets with microphones. This will allow the students to verbally explain their thinking using the headphones. This will help me know how to help students.

My Students

We are a school in North Central Utah with a diverse population. We have Chinese immersion integrated as part of our 5th grade. I work with all students throughout the week. Twenty-five percent of these students need extra help in reading, language arts, science, and math.

Almost all students in the classroom do not have headphones that will allow them to make audio recordings to verbally explain their thinking.

This would be so beneficial in not only the English portion of DLI but for their Chinese classes as well. It is our goal to have a set of headphones with a microphone for each student.

My Project

In my 5th classroom, I have Chinese Dual Language Immersion students who will use the headphones in these different ways. They can make audio recordings on Flipgrid, Online Voice Recorder, Google Slides, etc. They can also make videos on some of the same sites as above and also on Screencastify, and Loom.

This will allow my students to verbally explain their thinking using the headphones.

This will also help me know how to help students who are struggling. Having quality headphones will allow my students to use their devices to show their understanding, to create videos explaining their thinking, and communicate better while students are remote learning. I can create screencasts to model for their students. The headphones will help create better audio quality for videos.

In addition, the need for a web camera with a microphone is badly needed. This will allow me the opportunity to meet with parents over Zoom using my desktop computer. I will also be able to tutor students who are quarantined. In addition, a webcam will make it possible for me to make tutorial/modeling videos that students who are struggling, quarantined, or absent for any reason can watch. These videos can also personalize student learning as students can watch and re-watch these videos while the teacher is working with an individual or small group of students at their level.
