I teach Language Arts to a range of students with a mixture of abilities--from gifted and talented to special needs and everyone in between. My biggest challenge is keeping students motivated to learn and my hope is by incorporating hands-on technology into lessons, students will become engaged.
My students are a diverse group of sixth and seventh graders from various parts of the world who become engaged when technology is included in the curriculum.
They enjoy reading, learning about the world in new ways and creating fun projects with their friends. The school is in the suburbs in the middle of a business park in a city considered sister to Silicon Valley.
My Project
The tablets I am requesting would be used in table groups. Students will conduct online research in a way that allows them to own the information. It is no longer the teacher who presents the information to them, but they who become the teacher. They will do this by collaborating with each other, conducting research online, gathering information and presenting the information to the class. This would be an ongoing mode of learning throughout the school year. There are also many apps that I can use with students like Padlet, BrainPop, and a host of Google apps for education.
Donations to my project will improve my classroom in a number of ways.
Students lives will change for the better because we will use textbooks less and help develop student's digital skills more. Students will become engaged because the text and materials are digitally relevant to their lives now. Incorporating technology on a daily basis will keep students curious and interested in learning. The effect will empower students and prepare them to be college and career ready.
