Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In today's society, the ability to use and understand technology is the expectation. I want to equip my classroom with the technology needed for my students to be successful. My goal is to ensure that each of my students are college and career ready.
I teach an accelerated program that helps students catch up to their right grade, as well as an AVID elective class for students who will be the first generation to go to college.
These students are highly motivated to succeed. We are a low income school with a high ESL population and depend on community partners to help provide our needs for the students. Most of my students don't have computers at home to complete research assignments or access the online textbook. Our school district has all kinds of online resources for our kids, but they are unable to use them without technology. Our classroom is equipped with one laptop that the students have to share. This makes it very hard to do research assignments. My students have expressed interest in being able to have a more interactive classroom and I am more than happy to do everything in my power to provide that for them.
My Project
In this day and age, teachers have to compete for the attention of the students. How can we expect to hold the attention of students when they have such high tech video games and fast paced television shows? Computers and other technology in the classrooms are a start. I plan to use computers in my class is to create literacy stations and use Skype Classroom. This way my students can interact with other classrooms across the country, as well as online lectures from experts. My students will be able to hold discussions with other students about novels they read in class and participate in debates. I hope to teach them that there is a whole world outside of the walls of our class. Virtual field trips will help expand their knowledge. Not only can we read about places like The Great Wall of China, but we can also use Google to look at aerial views of it. Students learn better when they can actually connect to material they read. With computers in the class, the world is at their fingertips.
This project is something that I'm very passionate about and your donations will help to see it come into existence.
I can just imagine my students faces when they open the boxes and see the iPads donated to them. The kids are very excited about the possibility of communicating with students around the globe. They have so many questions they want to ask and I for one would like to see them get answers.
