My Students
Imagine trying to paint a masterpiece with a roller. You have the talent, but you lack the tools.
My students have the talent, but lack the tools they need to be successful.
My students have special needs.
They are in a "resource room" with me for Language arts. They are brilliant, imaginative, and hardworking. Writing is a challenge for them. Many lack the fine motor skills required to hold a pencil or write legibly. Others suffer from conditions like dyslexia which makes spelling a problem. My students become frustrated trying to overcome these difficulties, that they give up, and their idea is never fully expressed.
Writing is a process, but the act of writing is so painful for them, that they dread any revision, as they feel they are starting over.
They want to produce a quality written work, but the actual act of writing with a pen or pencil is too difficult for them.
My Project
The computers will be used for writing!! The students will be able to compose their thoughts, without fear of sloppy writing or spelling errors. They will be able to easily revise and improve their work by saving it. The students with fine motor skills will be proud of their professional looking typed product. The students who can't spell or use proper grammar, will be aided by spell check technology.
The kids will want to write on the computer, save their work, and revise it the next day. Their fear and frustration with writing will dissipate.
The use of technology will make these special needs students better writers!
The application of technology will help my students overcome their fear and inhibition about their awkwardness with pencil and paper and spelling and grammar.
Their writing skills will improve, their test scores will improve, and their ability to write their thoughts will improve. Most importantly, they will experience success, in an area of their life that has only been painful failure.
