Help me give my students technology to help support their reading growth. In this bundle, I am requesting headphones and MP4 players that will allow students to read e-books, listen to audiobooks, and record their own reading.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students have shown incredible resiliency in light of the Flint Water Crisis. Students come to school wanting to learn, and eager to make the world a better place. I teach seventh graders, who are beginning to have very serious questions about why they learn English language arts, and when they're going to use it. Luckily, our school emphasizes a strong classroom and school community, where we can explore ELA and help realize why it truly is important to us and our communities.

My Project

Many of my students are reading below grade level, so having support while they read is essential for their growth. Headphones will help them on Chromebooks where they have access to a wide arrange of materials. MP4/MP3 players will allow students to access books in a variety of formats, as well as record their own reading. This is an exciting opportunity for a few reasons.

Most importantly, students can create projects to read to younger audiences, either family members, or students at the elementary school, creating real purpose and motivation for their reading, (as well as a good excuse to read below grade level without making a student feel self conscious).

In addition, it can allow students privacy to record their reading in a corner or a hallway, allowing more opportunities for the teacher to assess their reading without drawing attention to possible weaknesses. My students are often excited about using technology in school, and so we can make reading seem accessible and exciting with these materials.
