Children are growing up in a world of technology. It needs to be a part of our classrooms as well. Having a listening center using iPads will allow my students to get excited about accessing books in a new way.
My students live in a very low income area and face many challenges that most children do not.
In our school population, almost 90% of students receive free or reduced price lunch and they all receive free breakfast. In spite of the challenges they face, the students come to school every day eager to learn. Our school is listed as a Priority School in Oregon. We have the task of creating an environment that fosters a love of reading and education to excite the students of this community to learn and reach their academic potential. Our school is committed to closing the achievement gap and holds a strong belief that every student can learn.
My Project
Having iPad minis in the classroom will allow me to set up a listening center for students during our literacy block. Having access to listen, read, and follow along with thousands of books will greatly impact their achievement in literacy. Several of my students do not speak English as their first language so listening to stories is a great way to enrich their vocabulary and impact their reading and speaking skills.
As a Priority School, our students are considered some of the most at risk in the state.
We feel that any additional support we can give our students in literacy will greatly impact their ability and help us close the achievement gap. The students need to have access to books in a variety of ways to increase their learning and maximize their potential. The listening center would be a great addition to our classroom!
