My Students
I teach in a low income/high poverty school district at the elementary level. My students are Kindergarteners and Third Graders who are the neediest academically. Some of these students are on Individual Education Plans; others simply struggle with academics. Students are broken up into small groups for academics to meet the diverse needs within each grade level. I work with some students for an entire year, others for only a specific learning concept. My students have limited access or no access to technology during their school day. Our school does not have enough computers for each grade level and a computer lab with outdated and/or broken equipment.
Our school has a diverse student body comprised of 43.6% African American students, 17.2% Asian students, 12.7% Hispanic students, 23.2% White students and 3.2% Multi-Race, Non-Hispanic students.
Although my students struggle academically, they are enthusiastic about learning and willing to try new things.
My Project
When I work with my students; the range of learning needs within my small groups of 6 to 8 can vary significantly. I incorporate multiple ways to teach the curriculum (centers, hands-on, partner work) however, I lack the ability to offer technology experiences. These laptops and accessories will help students be engaged in their learning.
My goal is to provide access to technology for each student in my Kindergarten and 3rd grade classes.
Currently, students need to have practice typing and using learning applications in order to complete assignments. Having three laptops and wireless mice will help my students become more proficient with 21st century technology.
