Technology for First Grade Leaders!

My Students

The students in my first grade class are interested in science, LEGO, making friends, art and cats. They want to succeed even though there are many forces in this country which fight against their efforts. They speak Amharic, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Somali, Latvian, Portuguese and English.

My students are inquisitive, hilarious, honest, and ambitious people.

More than half of them are living in poverty, and yet they have so much drive to learn. With all of those interests and challenges, our school works hard to know each student's name and need.

My Project

iPads will allow my students to access academic websites such as iRead and MyOn to improve reading fluency, reading comprehension, and math skills. We are fortunate to be able to use websites such as ST Math and Khan Academy to build on existing knowledge but limited access to devices keeps students from using these resources to their full potentials.

Digital literacy is a skill that is so important but, unfortunately, it is something that my students do not have many opportunities to practice.

Equity of access to these such resources is a vital part of closing the achievement gap. When we have enough technology to go around I envision my students making videos demonstrating their knowledge of a butterfly's life cycle and creating digital portfolios displaying their work throughout the year.

The addition of a USB charger will make it easier to ensure that all of our technology is powered up and ready to go.
