Technology for English Language Learners

My Students

Ivory Coast and Iraq. Vietnam and Venezuela. El Salvador and Ethiopia. Guatemala and Germany. Haiti and Honduras. My students are a truly international collection! Despite all of their varied cultures, my students form one community. Despite all of their varied socioeconomic backgrounds, they work and play together.

I am proud to teach this group of students who are able to do what many adults are unable to: they can see that, together, they are more than the sum of their differences.

Beyond coming from varied ethnic, economic, social, and cultural backgrounds, my students also are extremely varied in their learning styles.

This variability makes my job a day-to-day challenge, but one that is so rewarding. Finding the keys to unlock students' joy of mathematics is a unique pleasure that I deeply cherish.

My Project

My English Language Learners in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade have mixed abilities, both in English and in mathematics. Some have had extensive formal education in their home countries, some have had none. In order to give students the specialized instruction that they need, I will need to frequently use flexible grouping in my classroom.

If our classroom has enough Chromebooks for every two children to share one, some students would be able to complete translated and targeted skill practice, while the others are receiving small group instruction.

It is imperative that we have Chromebooks of our own so that I can teach my students can rely on, and get comfortable with, the technology.

In addition to the Chromebooks, we will need a lockable charging station to keep them secure, and the education license to fully access the resources.
