My classroom in Boston is filled with a diverse group of learners: some are learning English for the first time, some have individual education plans to help them overcome learning challenges, some are extremely high achieving, and some would rather school didn't exist. As eighth graders, many need to have the spark for learning reignited; they have lost interest along the way. My public school recently became a K-8 school, and my class will be the first graduating class of eighth graders! I hope that every one of them will get into the high school of their choice, and that all will choose to graduate it. Because the school is expanding, our class will be held in a modular classroom (which is not ready for the start of the school year). I would love for the children to feel special, not that they are shoved to the outskirts.
