My Students
My school district has a very diverse student body in regards to both ethnicity and economic class. A large percentage of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Some of the backgrounds and home lives my students have would break your heart, but they are strong individuals and show up to school trying their best. Many of my students struggle with having their basic needs met, yet are supportive of each other and show me that there are no limits to the inspiration and motivation they give each other. My school district has loaned over 1500 Chromebooks for students to use during the school closure. For many students, this is a very anxious time for them since they are unfamiliar with technology and uncomfortable with an electronic interface with me. My goal is to help reduce their anxiety by providing more familiar feedback to all my students.
My Project
The COVID -19 crisis has forced teachers to be more flexible and adaptable than they have ever had to be before. My school, like so many others, has now moved to distance learning. Grading electronic copies of student work can be challenging. An iPad has many useful applications that allow you to digitally write on student work (unlike a desktop computer) to give useful, timely, important feedback to help them learn. The iPad will allow me to easily differentiate instruction and communicate seamlessly with my Special Education students.
Timely and quality teacher feedback is essential to student learning.
This is especially helpful when a student is struggling to solve a problem or understand a challenging concept. You can write out the solution or draw a diagram and create quick differentiated feedback similar to actually being in class with our students. The duration of this crisis is unknowable... but the iPad will be useful no matter how long this crisis lasts and for after it passes.
