Our district is a low socioeconomic status (SES) with more than 80% of students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. Students attend class regularly because they know it is a safe place and they are cared for at school. Like many mid-western cities who no longer have a strong industrial presence, students face a variety of challenges.
Our goal is to provide students with the tools and experiences needed to reach their fullest potential and achieve their goals.
Many of our students have experienced hardship and personal challenges that affect their learning. Despite these challenges, students want to learn and thrive with new strategies.
My Project
My students are working at bridging the education gap for low socioeconomic students. Our school district issues students laptops, but these are not the most user friendly and do not lend themselves to collaboration or differentiation tools such as speech to text or read aloud. Time is lost and frustration elevated by students having to wait for laptops that are not instinctive for differentiation.
This is my second project and the gains I have seen from my students using an iPad are substantial.
The additional iPad allows more students to access their learning. Student frustration is reduced because they can access tools they need for success. They have created videos and movies to make connections to their learning. Speech-to-text and immersive reader programs help students access content along with develop reading and writing skills.
