My Students

My first grade classroom is a diverse community of learners. Students in my class work hard to develop a love of learning and treat one another with kindness and respect. We take time to listen to one another and learn from our differences. We also love to read!

My students learn to fall in love with learning!

We use the writing and reading workshop models at our school, in addition to math centers. I am always giving a chance for students to think and act like readers, writers, scientists, and mathematicians. I love teaching my class because I get to watch the dramatic growth and change they experience over the year!

My Project

An an ever-increasingly digital world, technology continues to play more of a role in my classroom. We personally use apps, such as iReady Math and Reading, at our school to support and enhance the material we are teaching students. For the last two and a half months of the 2019-2020 school year, my students relied on technology to continue their education. Our school currently has enough devices to provide 1:1 technology for students in grades 3-5, and they have been able to raise funds to start providing the same for our second graders.

Amidst the uncertainty of what school will look like this year, I want to provide students with access to the devices they need while continuing to maintain appropriate social distancing.

Last year, I had 7 iPads from the school, with an additional 2 iPad minis from a previous teacher's Donors Choose donations. My goal to add 2 more iPads will allow for us to get closer to having 1 device per 2 students in the classroom.

In previous years, I've used iPads in literacy and math stations. I also had a computer station in the room students could use too. However, with our current need for social distancing, this cannot feasibly work. I will not be able to use my computers this year because we will need the space for desks to be spread out, and they cannot be adequately spaced out. With 1 device per 2 students, I will be able to have each student access what they need on the device every other day, giving me an opportunity to sanitize the technology accordingly between uses.
